Intel completes $120M RealNetworks patent buy

SAN FRANCISCO—Intel Corp. has closed the $120 million deal to acquire some of RealNetworks Inc.'s patents and software, RealNetworks said Thursday (April 5).

Intel (Santa Clara, Calif.) and RealNetworks (Seattle) first announced the deal to sell roughly 190 patents, 170 patent applications and next-generation video codec software to Intel in January.

Under the terms of the deal, RealNetworks retains certain rights to continue to use the patents in current and future products and does not expect the sale will have any material impact on its businesses, the company said.
