TI narrows the gap between high speed and accuracy through its new SAR ADC series

Ti expanded its high-speed data converter product series, and introduced a series of new successive approximation register (SAR) ADC, which can achieve high-precision data acquisition in industrial design. The adc3660 series achieves excellent dynamic range at ultra-low power consumption, including eight SAR ADCs with 14, 16 and 18 bit resolution and 10-125msps sampling speed, which can help designers improve signal resolution, prolong battery life and enhance system protection.

High speed data acquisition accuracy meets the increasing demand of industrial system for real-time control. In the high-speed digital control loop, ADC monitors and responds to the rapid change of voltage or current in complex system, which helps to prevent the key components of power management system from being damaged and wasting cost. With the increasing number of data intensive tasks in industrial systems, the system needs to make rapid decisions to prevent system failures, which increases the demand for faster speed and higher accuracy.

Protection of industrial system by faster response time in digital control loop

The delay of adc3660 series at similar speed is 80% lower than that of similar devices. For example, system designers use 125msps, 14 bit, dual channel adc3664 to achieve a clock (8NS) ADC delay. The ultra-low delay of the series enables high-speed digital control loops in various industrial systems to monitor and respond to voltage and current peaks more accurately, thus improving tool accuracy in semiconductor manufacturing and other application scenarios.

Industry advanced noise performance at ultra low power consumption

Until now, engineers who design industrial systems have to choose between excellent noise performance and low power consumption. This is a particularly difficult decision for engineers designing battery powered devices that require accurate data acquisition. The adc3660 series does not need this trade-off. For example, adc3683 (industry's ultra fast 18 bit, 65msps ADC) can improve the noise performance of narrowband frequency applications such as portable defense radio. It can provide 84.2db SNR and - 160dbfs / Hz noise spectrum density, while maintaining 94mw low power consumption per channel. The total power consumption of 10msps and 14bit adc3541 is 36mw, which can simplify thermal management and extend the battery life of power sensitive applications such as GPS receivers or handheld electronic devices. 65msps and 16bit adc3660 can provide 82dbfs SNR, which can improve the image resolution in sonar applications, and the power consumption is 65% lower than that of similar devices (71MW per channel).

Reduce design complexity by using integration features and high sampling frequency

The high sampling speed and integration features of the adc3660 series help designers reduce the number of components in their systems. For example, the adc3683 achieves a sampling rate four times faster than other 18 Bit devices at twice the channel density; It also supports an oversampling technique to push the harmonics of the desired signal to a higher frequency, which enables the designer to reduce the complexity of the anti aliasing filter and the number of system components by 75%.

Other features that reduce design complexity include the on-chip decimation option, which allows designers to easily remove unwanted noise and harmonics from the system, and increase SNR and spurious free dynamic range to 15dB. These decimation options, as well as complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) interfaces, support designers to use these ADCs in conjunction with arm based ADCs ® Instead of using field programmable gate array (FPGA), it helps to reduce the system cost.

In addition, the integrated digital buck converter with complex NC oscillator can reduce the required processor resources. For more information, read the technical article how to simplify AFE filtering with a high speed ADC with an internal digital filter.
