Asahi Glass to demo 0.1mm glass laminate at SID

MANHASSET, NY -- At next week’s Society for Information Display exhibition manufacturer of glass, chemicals and high-tech materials AGC will showcase carrier glass on which to laminate its 0.1 mm-thick ultra-thin glass for next-generation displays and various other applications.

AGC has developed the technology to laminate ultra-thin glass onto 0.5mm carrier glass enabling circuit formation and other processing of ultra-thin glass without having to alter existing production facilities.

Carrier glass and ultra-thin glass are laminated via a special bonding layer that makes the laminated substrate highly resistant to heat. The carrier glass prevents the ultra-thin glass from coming into direct contact with processing equipment to prevent defects such as scratches, and can be easily de-laminated after processing.

Tokyo-based Asahi Glass Company was founded in 1907 and was the first Japanese company to produce sheet glass. Highlights of its recent FY2012 first quarter financial results show net sales at 285.4 bil. yen (about $3.64 billion). The results also state that "while shipments in the glass and chemicals business segments increased mainly in Japan and Asia, the Group’s sales and profits fell, affected by price decline in electronics-related products."

SID 2012 is being held in Boston next week June 3 to 8, and AGC is one of the exhibitors.
