Bourns buy of Jensen Devices opens auto lamp play

MANHASSET, NY -- Bourns, Inc. has completed its purchase of substantially all of the assets of Jensen Devices AB (Stockholm, Sweden), a design and manufacturing firm of gas discharge tubes.

The company’s Sparctube series of GDTs are used for switching ignition circuits for automotive high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps. Jensen Devices also services industrial and telecom markets with GDTs used as overvoltage protectors.

The strategic purchase is expected to broaden the technical capabilities of Bourns’ industry-leading GDT product line while opening the automotive HID market for the company, according to Bourns.

“Jensen Devices’ novel and patented Flat gas tube technology will further strengthen Bourns’ position as a leading supplier of circuit protection solutions,” said Erik Meijer, president of Bourns Electronics, in a statement.

Bourns, which for more than 35 years has developed GDTs for the circuit protection market, has made 10 acquisitions in the preceding 12 years, including Joslyn Electronics’ communication protection products business, Texas Instruments’ solid state Telecom protection business, Fultec’s Transient Blocking Unit technology and the Protection Product businesses of Corning Cable Systems and Emerson Network Power.
