Portugal IP firm wins spot in U-blox GPS chip

LONDON – IP core developer SiliconGate LDA (Porto, Portugal has said that its power management IP has been included in the U-blox 7 platform and the UBX-G7020 chip implementation from U-blox AG (Thalwil, Switzerland), which it claims is the world's lowest power multi-standard global navigation satellite system.

A key figure of merit for the UBX-G7020 receiver is that it only consumes 7-milliwatts of power in continuous navigation. The UBX-G7020 can work with signals from GPS, GLONASS, QZSS, Compass and Galileo and is implemented in a 65-nm RF CMOS manufacturing process from GlobalFoundries Inc.

U-blox recently expanded its role in positioning and wireless technology for machine-to-machine, automotive and consumer markets through the acquisition of Cognovo ltd. and 4M Wireless Ltd.

"Our GNSS satellite receivers are often used in portable battery operated devices where low power consumption is a crucial requirement for our customers. Integrating SiliconGate’s power management IP into our latest u-blox 7 positioning platform gives our products a strategic advantage and enables us to bring a whole new generation of attractive chip and module products on the market," said Eric De Mey, vice president of IC development at U-blox, in a statement from SiliconGate.

"One of our main achievements has been to make our DC/DC converters SoC and RF friendly. This means: low noise, compact, efficient at low loads and using small inductors so that they can be used where they make a difference," said Floriberto Lima, CEO of SiliconGate, in the same statement.
