MediaTek takes Rambus license

SAN FRANCISCO—Technology licensor Rambus Inc. said Monday (March 5) that Taiwanese chip vendor MediaTek Inc. agreed to license Rambus's patents, just days after a U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) administrative law judge ruled that MediaTek and other firms were not infringing several Rambus patents that Rambus had asserted against them.

Financial terms of the five-year license deal were not disclosed. Rambus said the agreement  covers the use of Rambus patents in a broad range of semiconductor products offered by MediaTek. The two companies have also settled all outstanding claims, including resolution of past use of Rambus technology, Rambus (Sunnyvale, Calif.) said.

Last week, Rambus announced that an administrative law judge at the ITC issued a preliminary determination that MediaTek, LSI Corp., STMicroelectronics NV and other companies did not infringe on several Rambus patents that the technology licensor asserted against them in a complaint filed in 2010. Rambus could still request that the determination be reviewed by the full ITC.
